Kids Reveal The Best Candy To Give Trick-Or-Treaters

What are you handing out to trick-or-treaters this Halloween? Are you going full-size?

Halloween is just weeks away, so it’s time to get your candy plan in place. When trick-or-treaters knock on your door, what do you want to have at home to put in their pumpkin? There are entire store aisles full of options, but you’d better choose well, unless you want to be known as the worst house on the block because you’re handing out awful stuff.

So, what is the best candy to give trick-or-treaters? Eater went straight to the experts - kids, of course - to find out their favorites and the “treats” they don’t even bother opening in their candy haul.

The best Halloween candy list is full of chocolate and gummies, and size matters, too … the bigger the better:

“Full-sized Twix or Hershey’s bar.”

“Sour Patch Kids, because they’re really yummy”

“Candy corn, ’cause they taste really good.”

“A king-size Crunch bar is the sign of a great house. The rarest candy is Sugar Babies — I’ve never had one in my whole entire life. Gummy Krabby Patties would also be good.”

“Lollipops or Reese’s peanut butter cups.”

“There is a house in our neighborhood that sets up a table with whole bags of a single brand of candy and kids get to pick the one they want, though I watched a kid choose a whole bag of Dots over Smarties last year.”

“King-size Hershey’s, king-size anything!”

The Worst things to get while trick-or-treating, according to kids:

“No healthy stuff”

“The worst thing to pass out are toothbrushes and raisins.”

“In my opinion, Warheads are the worst because they’re too sour and most kids don’t like them.”

“100 Grand bars are awful. I got so many of them one Halloween and they tasted awful.”

“Zombie Sour Patch Kids because they look weird and taste sour.”

“Twizzlers or licorice sticks. They suck. No one likes them.”

“NEVER DENTAL FLOSS.”

“Fruit, raisins, veggies. No one wants healthy stuff.”

“Something out of the garbage.”

“Those candies that are hard and I don’t like them and I spit them in the trash.”

Forgotten Civil War Vet Now Getting Proper Tombstone, Thanks To 2 Eighth Graders

A pair of middle school students in western New York spent their summer doing something most kids would avoid - research. Kendall Peruzzini and Mary McCormick were offered a research project to work on during their break from school and the history-loving teens jumped at the opportunity. And now their hard work is paying off and a Civil War veteran will finally be getting the recognition he deserves.

Daniel Walterhouse was a Union Army soldier who died at age 87 in 1910, but wasn’t given a proper burial. Kendall and Mary, eighth graders at Albion Middle School, found Walterhouse had been injured during the war and spent time in a Confederate prison camp, before ending up in a poorhouse for more than a decade. He was buried in an unmarked grave in a part of the cemetery for people who couldn’t afford a headstone.

But that’s all about to change, thanks to Mary and Kendall. They successfully petitioned the Orleans County Legislature to approve a headstone request for Walterhouse and now they’re waiting to hear back from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to approve their application for a headstone. “He was a war veteran and he did get injured,” Mary explains. “He got stabbed and captured, so I think it’s just really important that he gets recognized.”

And thanks to new research from Holafly, we now know the worst offenders.

They used the My Data Manager app to test data usage of the most popular apps on both an iPhone 15 Pro Max and an Android Xiaomi Redmi 9.

They shut down all other apps and turned off Wi-Fi access, then they started a stopwatch when launching the app.

They used each app for five minutes and recorded the total data usage (MB) from My Data Manager reports.

So, what’s the worst offender? YouTube eats up more mobile data than any other popular apps tested, at 193 MB for five minutes of typical use.

That’s close to 29% more than the next one on the list, Disney+ with 150MB.

The social media app that uses the most data is Snapchat with 101 MB, while Safari is the mobile browser that uses the most, 56MB.

How old were you when you saw your first scary movie? New research suggests that if your interest in horror films started when you were a kid, chances are you still love them as a grown-up. They’re actually a staple of the Halloween season for 84% of Americans, according to a new survey.

The poll of 2-thousand U.S. adults who celebrate Halloween also reveals:

A lot of Americans got into horror movies at a young age, as 68% say they started enjoying them as a child, and 73% still enjoy them today.

Nearly two-thirds (65%) watched their first one before they were 11 and another 60% think watching your first scary movie at a slumber party is a rite of passage for kids.

During “spooky season,” Americans watch an average of five different scary movies, but 23% watch 10 or more.

For 29%, horror is their favorite film genre, no matter what season it is.

Overall, the favorite types are supernatural and paranormal movies (43%), psychological thrillers (40%) and slasher flicks (30%).

Digging in deeper, 19% of respondents consider themselves to be “gore hounds” who want to see as much blood and horror as possible. This group who loves more frights and bloodshed than others is also most likely to prefer gummy Halloween candy (34%).

Just 10% consider themselves to be “Kitch-y classic Carls” who enjoy the usual horror movies and some B-grade flicks, along with fruity candy (23%).

Nearly a quarter (22%) are “Ghostbusters,” those who like all things paranormal and 78% have since they were kids.

Another 30% say they’re “Family-friendly Frans” who go for slightly scary movies the whole family can enjoy.

No matter their horror tolerance, Americans say the best parts of Halloween are going trick-or-treating or handing out candy to trick-or-treaters (55%), watching scary movies (54%) and decorating their homes (50%).

During week six of ESPN's "College GameDay" series, a University of California, Berkeley, engineering student named Daniel took part in the field goal challenge hosted by sports commentator and former NFL punter Pat McAfee. The weekly contest where a fan attempts a field goal is rarely successful, but Daniel, who had some soccer experience from high school, stepped up for a 33-yard kick with a $75-thousand prize at stake.

Although Daniel's first attempt missed wide right, it was a solid effort that exceeded the expectations of McAfee and the show’s crew, especially given Daniel’s odd choice of footwear — unlaced, slip-on Vans sneakers. Impressed, McAfee offered Daniel a second chance, but this time for $100-thousand. Plus, another $100-thousand was pledged to victims of Hurricane Helene.

On his second try, Daniel kicked the ball straight through the center, securing the hundred-large prize. McAfee joined Daniel’s celebration as they both ran across the field. This was the second time this season that a fan had made a successful field goal on the show, following a Texas A&M student who won $50-thousand earlier in week one.

According to a witness, one man took exception to the jukebox song selection of another man, an argument ensued…and both men were reportedly armed. Reportedly, the true fighting words were when it was inferred that he “wasn’t a real Mexican if you play that (expletive) music.” The victim was later identified as 54-year-old Socorro Camacho, and police are still looking for the shooter.
