Water providers in at least seven states have reported cyber intrusions since July 27, according to the FBI. Officials say some of the attacks disrupted normal operations. The hackers are targeting internet-connected Rockwell Automation industrial control devices. Once inside the systems, they have changed IP addresses and passwords, locking operators out of equipment used to monitor and control water systems. In some cases, the FBI says the attacks caused drops in water pressure and flooding. In Minnesota, more than 30 community water systems were affected during a single weekend. Officials said there is no indication that drinking water was contaminated. Preliminary findings suggest Iran may be behind the attacks.
